Pastrami

People who know me will be aware of my love of Pastrami. It’s hard to find in the UK, expensive too, but sometime you find it. Today I went into Marks & Spencers to get some lunch; only to find they have a New York Deli Pastrami sandwich!

So what delights are in this fantasy of a sandwich:
Pastrami (the vital ingredient)
Mustard
Gherkins (pickles to you, hehe)
Sauerkraut
Gruyere & Emmental cheese
all on Rye and Caraway bread

My day has been made!

Sainsburys are useless

Since Sainsburys changed their warehousing policy their stores have nothing in. This evening I went to my local store to stock up having returned from holiday. This is the sight that confronted me.
no stock
Sorry for the quality, only had my phone to take a picture
How many customers are they willing to loose before they fix this silly situation?

Radio Alice

When I’m in California, I listen to a radio station called Radio Alice. The morning show with Sarah & No-name is excellent. They’re truely offensive and go beyond the boundaries of normal radio, it’s amazing they’re still on air.

Well, finally, after about 2 years of them saying they were about to do it….you can listen to them online. Unfortunately you have to use Windows MediaPlayer to listen to it. In the UK their show starts about 4pm.

Sore feet

Having been out walking in the Lake District just over a week ago and then snowboarding in Tahoe this weekend my body has taken quite a beating compared to its norm of sitting behind a desk. Today it got a little more of a work out too. Walking around San Francisco turned into a bit of an epic.

Surfs Up

I’ve been wanting to go surfing for a while now, but finally got the opportunity with Nikki today. Things were not looking good in the morning though. The webcam showed only small waves and weather reports said it was very cold. Finally we plucked up the courage to head over to Santa Cruz, a lovely drive over the mountains. Hired a wetsuit and board. There’s me with a surf board!

Ready to surf

Nikki gave me a very quick lesson in what to do. The water was freezing, not frozen obviously but it was really really cold. Braving cold water we ventured out to find have a go. Since I’ve never been before and Nikki is quite good I needed a few tips. After a short while I managed to not get the nose of my board to go directly under the waves. This allowed me to get on top on a few and stumble to my feet before falling off. After that I was cold and tired, it’s really hard work on your shoulders. We retired to find Falafel and Tea

Cities all have their bad areas

Living in Manchester I’m used to areas that you really don’t want to go into. “Moss Side” is such a place, most famous for the riots there in the late 80’s and for the band Oasis saying they grew up there, before having to admit they didn’t. Even all this time later things haven’t improved too much. The council tore down the curved concrete town blocks, affectionately known as “The BullRings”. However, the people didn’t want to move from the area so they moved into the newly built homes. So while the area may look much better than it did before, not much has changed.

British Airways show of strength

At Heathrow today British Airways seemed to be putting on some typically British show of strength to the other airlines. Outside their hangers, opposite Terminal 3, they had lined up five 747 aircraft. Rather than have them parked away or parked further off the airfield, they’re there in full show. With amazing accuracy and symmetry they stand there almost screaming “look at our fleet, and this is just the stuff we’re not flying today”

BMI – Going down hill

I have been a big fan of BMI for a long time, they’re the small airline trying to survive up against the big airlines. They’ve traditionally done this by being cheaper and offering more than other airlines. As part of the Star Alliance program they’re a great partner for the likes of United. However, recently they’re showing signs of loosing what has made them distinctive. As we move into 2006 BMI have taken away the free alcohol on long haul flights (for economy passengers) and will no longer through check luggage, even onto Star Alliance flights if you’re on a separate ticket.

Hiking in the Lake District

This weekend gave me some new experiences. I’ve never really been hiking and also never stayed in a youth hostel. I was invited to join some of my uni friends up in Coniston (in the Lake District) for a weekend of walking and more importantly beer drinking.
We travelled up on the Friday night (picking up 2 from Lancaster train station) arriving though the fog into Coniston by 10pm. The youth hostel was surprising nice, we were in a room of 8 (4 bunk beds). Since there was a strict, “doors close at 11” we scooted to the pub for a swift pint.

WordPress 2.0.1

I’ve upgraded my site from WordPress 1.5 to 2.0.1. I must admit the new version is generally better. However, it still has poor support in Safari. Since I use a PowerBook as my main machine this is annoying to say the least. You have to remove an if to get the buttons to appear in the edit window for starters. Then file uploads no longer work in Safari. Firefox, sure, they work fine there.
I don’t know if I should be annoyed with Apple for not getting Safari up to standard quick enough or WordPress for not ensuring basic features work on a popular browser.

At home ill

I’m at home ill today, I really hate it. Why is it when you’ve bunged up a not feeling well that you don’t seem to be able to shut off your mind? I’m here and thinking about work, what I need to do at home. Which is all well and good but my bones hurt and my head feels like a fish bowl. Why, oh why, have they not found a cure for the common cold.
I’ve been trying to be healthy this year, not drinking mid-week, eating better food etc. Since doing so I’ve ended up being more ill. How does that work?
