Just enough vs. Too much

While sitting by the pool in Palm Springs it occurred to me that one of the critical differences between America and England is quantity. Here’s a few examples

  • The average restaurant serving
  • Choices of simple things like bread/cheese in a supermarket
  • The number of swimming pools at a holiday resort

It is of course the last one that cleared it up for me. The resort we are staying in has many pools. Not uncommon, you might think. Well, the main pool are has 3 large pools plus some hot-tubs. But there are other pools located close by as well as pools dotted around the via complex’s. While some of these pools are busy others are relatively quiet and peaceful. It’s this level of choice and quantity that seems to make things better over here. I’ve been on many a european holiday where the large campsite has one pool, or the hotel has one pool that everyone crowds around. Here there’s just so much choice that you can seek out the quite atmosphere.

San Diego

On the way to Palm Springs, Nikki and I took a detour to San Diego for Christins graduation from UCSD. Thanks to Alaska Air for over booking the flight which meant we were on stand-by for the flight! We did however got onboard, as the last passengers.
Nikki had booked the hotel, Sheraton SD, which looked very posh and described itself as “close to the gas lamp”. Turns out it was actually by the airport. This isn’t such a big deal in San Diego as the airport is almost in downtown.
The following morning we got up early to be at the graduation which for some unknown reason, stated at 8:30AM. That’s just a cruel way to finish your education.

Christin was on the stage for the entire, 2 1/2 hour event, as she won an award for being one of the top 7 students in her graduating class.

WWDC Bash

Last night I got to attend the WWDC Bash for the first time as an employee. Buses were arranged to take us up to San Francisco’s Buena Vista gardens, as the party was not on campus this year. It was quite weird seeing every engineer in exactly the same blue t-shirt complete with “Keeper of the code” on the back. Here’s a nice picture from an attendees flicker site

Bad Tenants

The tenants who have been in my Manchester (Salford) house since decided to move out and simply return the keys in an envelope to the letting agent. Never mind paying the rent they owed or that their lease was still in place. Thankfully a deposit was taken for a reason. But if you are renting (letting) a house or apartment in Manchester do not take tenants by the name of Christian Booth & Collin Lucas.
But yay for my letting agent who re-let the property in 2 days.
Update 1: The inventory is in; looks like some of the furniture left with the tenants and they made some modifications like installing a glass screen in the bathroom, changing the blinds to be silver, not wood and painted a few walls. All in all; not very good.

Birthday

This weekend it was my birthday. I’d arranged a party out by Nikki’s grandmas pool. It was a lot of fun, however, for some reason my camera didn’t make an appearance. As always Chester was on hand to capture the moment
