BMI – Going down hill

I have been a big fan of BMI for a long time, they’re the small airline trying to survive up against the big airlines. They’ve traditionally done this by being cheaper and offering more than other airlines. As part of the Star Alliance program they’re a great partner for the likes of United. However, recently they’re showing signs of loosing what has made them distinctive. As we move into 2006 BMI have taken away the free alcohol on long haul flights (for economy passengers) and will no longer through check luggage, even onto Star Alliance flights if you’re on a separate ticket.

This kind of cost cutting, and I was assured it was that, is what you expect from United or Continental, not BMI. Their planes are also showing their age. While cleverly putting their small fleet (especially the large A320s) to incredibly efficient use it seems to be taking its toll. The interiors are no longer sparklingly clean, with free socks, masks and toothbrushes handed out to customers. Recently its been more; cushions that slide off the seats, seat-back TVs that don’t work and tatty and sometimes dirty lavatories.

Come on BMI, bring back some of that fighting spirit I’ve enjoyed over the last 4 years of traveling. Even in these times of increasing fuel prices and increased competition I know you can do better. All this will push passengers to look to other airlines in the Star Alliance program.
