Paragon, San Jose

To celebrate a year in America I invited a wide group of friends for drinks at Paragon, San Jose. This is a nice bar in the Hotel Montgomery. Before there Nikki and I tried to go to Original Joes but due to it just opening the wait for a table was 2 hours! So we went to another little place down the street
A lot of people turned out including some with unexpected presents. I’m now well stocked in English treats like Mushy Peas and Cornish Pasties. By midnight the crowd was starting to dwindle so we moved on to a Spanish bar next to Cinibar.
Thanks to everyone for come along, I had a great time. See you all for the 2nd party next year!

Chemical Brothers

Nothing better than getting to celebrate a year in America that seeing the Chemical Brothers at the SF Design Center. There were 2 warm-up acts, DJ Lady Jane and then some band that are samples in CB tracks.

The light show was amazing as usual, with a chainlink screen behind them on stage for videos. They were on stage for a total of 2 hours, longer than I’ve ever seen them.

A Year In America

Wow – it’s been a year already.

This is the first time I’ve been able to take in the full American (Californian) experience. Despite visiting here so often it’s amazing that there’s still a lot you don’t pick up on. The simple things catch you out, like how the hills change so quickly from green to golden brown in summer but so slowly back to green the autumn (aka fall). Then there’s the American holidays, Labor Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day. Independence Day was the weirdest for me, of course being English I couldn’t get fully into things. I did notice that the day is now simply referred to as “the 4th of July”, perhaps somewhat loosing of it’s original meaning.

I’ve been making some great friends and having a lot of fun. Although there’s still people who don’t understand me, with the weird English accent. Not to mention that there’s continually sayings and references that are alien to me. For example to me “Thanks a bunch!” is negative to me, but in America that’s like saying “Thank you very much!”. Simple things still catch me out; since cycling over here there’s been something very different about it which I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Cycling home the other day it occurred to me, I was riding on the right-hand-side of the road! Driving never seems different, but cycling certainly does.
Shopping for food is still a challenge. The food products have different packaging, names and brands. Also some of the food really isn’t available here. It’s a weird thing but I still haven’t adjusted to this, at Safeway or Albertson’s takes me a lot longer than it would to wander around Sainsbury’s for example.

Some of the things I’ve done
*Palm Springs on vacation
*Visiting England for 2 weddings
*Weekend in Chicago
*Weekend in San Diego
*Weekend in Tahoe/Reno
*Snowboarding at Squaw, Tahoe
*Bodie (Ghost Town)
*Yosemite, Jamestown, Columbia (all in CA)
*Las Vegas, NV; for a stag party
*Paradise, California
*Weekend in San Louis Obispo
*Watching races at Laguna Seca

Also attended the following concerts
*Stevie Wonder
*The Police
*Willy Nelson
*And for the anniversary, The Chemical Brothers!

Things that have changed about me.
The Californian effect has started to kick in, my choice of shoes these days is Flip-Flops without a second thought. They’re just a lot more comfortable when its warm, even with jeans too. Also I wear shorts far more, where I would automatically choose jeans the shorts come out. So my clothing has in general become a lot more relaxed as have I. Well a little anyway 😉
The American diet has taken a small toll increasing my weight by about 5 pounds since moving here. Hopefully that can be fixed by more cycling, running and generally better eating.
Something that had always bothered me about America was needing to go to so many places to do shopping. Unless you’re somewhere like San Francisco you have to go to many different places for each type of thing. For example to get shoes and socks it normally requires going to a show store and then on to a department store for the socks. This is why American’s are always saying, “I need to be able to run some errands”. This really doesn’t bother me now, it just seems the norm, running around between different stores. Parking close to the door of every store isn’t required, unlike most Americans it seems I can actually walk more than 10 yards from my car to the store.

Working life in California
Things have changed a lot for me working at Apple during this year. Firstly working for an American company is very different, with the tax, shares, social security, 401k, etc. After just a few months of working in the Core OS team I moved to working on the iPhone. A few months later the opportunity of managing an engineering team presented itself, who was I to turn that down? Over 9 months in that role and its all going very well. We shipped a number of products, even attending the launch events and the team is growing so things are really going well. Looking back on my departure from Transitive in April 2006 I can really see that I made the right decision.

Another bike ride, another repair

My bike is in for repair again today. After going out for a short ride the crank on my bike started to make noises again. It seems the repair done last time didn’t fix it so it’s going to the bike doctor. There goes my plan to cycle to work, perhaps Thursday.

Homemade Donner

I made Donner kebabs this evening! Wow! they were really good. After a year without donner kebabs this really was a treat. A local store sells the spices and I found a recipe on the net. Bakes in the oven for 4 hours the wait was enough to make me hungry and not wait to take a picture of the fine creation 🙁 I’ll take a picture when I make them next time.

Potluck BBQ Party

Nikki had arranged a potluck BBQ party for Saturday night, but with the weather turning there was no way to have something outside. The venue was moved to my apartment with seating setup for all 11 people (patio furniture in the living room, i know how to live!). The grill was going with tri-tip, sausages and chicken. As usual we made too much food so i’ve got lunch sorted for the week. We went through a lot of wine and beer, but still a lot left. Seems were not quite the same party people we used to be as things finished around midnight, everyone either had enough to drink or needed to be up and about tomorrow. Fantastic night! Thanks to everyone one for bringing along the side, and drinks.

Guests: Shaw & Jessica, Leo & Sarah, Melissa & Phil, Rudi, Andrea & Melvin.

Pho and Uglys

It seems to becoming a more regular thing, but last night after Pho, we walked down to Uglys for another session of cheap drinking.

more Cycling

Today I went out on my bike again, this time along Foothill and up to the Alpine in before once again returning down through the Palo Alto open space reserve.

Visit to Paradise

After living in California for nearly I year it was about time I went to visit my relatives up in Paradise. Ken and Wynona really are great people. Their son and daughter-in-law, Tom & Monica have now moved back to Paradise along with their two children, Luke and Owen. So this really was a catchup with everyone. We were greeted with the usual hugs and smiles of the Brown family. The weekend was mostly spent talking about anything from politics to family memories or simply playing with the kids.
Given the long labor day weekend they’d decided we should go out on lake Oroville for lunch and some swimming. It was amazing and reminded me of the 4 week holiday I spent with them in Paradise, some 14 years ago.

Corrupt drive

The drive on my MacBook Pro developed some corrupt sectors, resulting in all the keychains and some frameworks being corrupt too. So I’ve had to reinstall my laptop, then restore from a disk image of the drive. Turns out the drive was always formatted from using Apple Partition Map and not GUI Partition Map that’s compatible with Intel. The drive much have originally been formatted on a PPC machine 🙁

Everything seems to be returned to normal.

80’s Party and Laeres Birthday

Two parties in one evening and a drunk Jon. The evening began about 7pm in San Jose for Tamara’s birthday party. She’s mad on the 80’s so we had to come in 80’s dress. To get over my shame I started drinking.

I’d secured a completely hideous jacket (complete with shoulder pads) and pink shirt for the occasion. Nikki went all out with red shoes, crimped hair and an amazingly large belt.
