Arrived in California

My relocation is now well underway. I’ve arrived in California after an excellent flight in a Virgin Atlantic Upper Class suite from Heathrow to SFO. Nikki was there to meet me with a huge smile, now that her boyfriend lives in the same country.

Arriving at 2pm there wasn’t really much that was going to happen on the first day. After some relaxing it was time for my first American meal. Of course this had to be a nice juicy burger and curly fries. I’m going to try and be a lot healthier but as a first meal you can’t get much more American than that!

Moved

I’ve finally done it, my home is now my house. I have moved out of Manchester and my house is now home to someone else. Turns out this was more emotional that I had expected…there’s probably more to come. That home has been the focus of my life (and money) for over 5 years so it’s sad to see it go. However, all things have to come to an end…there’s more excitement ahead of me in California.

Bad Advice

Today has been a day from hell. Firstly my leasehold company want to charge me to rent out my house. The company in question is Simarc. Now you probably won’t be able to get hold of this company, their numbers have changed and their website doesn’t work. Basically they just sit there and rake in the money.
Then as if things weren’t going badly enough I am informed that my mortgage cannot be turned into a letting mortgage. I was advised by Countrywide that this was the best mortgage as the change to letting was quick, simple and free. Turns out it’s not so much simple or free, but it certainly is quick.
Well there you have it; two useless companies encountered in a single day. How these companies can justify their actions I’m yet to find out.

My Sister got engaged

My Sister, Joy, finally got engaged to her long-term boyfriend Simon this last week.
Joy and Simon
They’ve been together for something like 8 years to it’s nice to hear that they’re going to get married. Looks like there’s a growing number of wedding for me to attend in the UK over the next year or two.

Finally ready

I’m finally ready to move! Today was intense packing (even with a slight hangover) and sorting out of things in the house. By mid afternoon I’d grown board of packing so decided to head into town. What else to do than buy a copy of Forbes magazine and chilli in Atlas bar with a pint of Hoegaarden. While reading through the magazine and looking around it suddenly hit me…I’m ready to move. The next 2 weeks are going to fly by but it now, can’t come soon enough.

Drunken subtitles

While at the gym this morning I noticed something a little odd on one of the TVs. Since the sound is turned off, each TV shows the sub titles for the program. The program on in front of my tredmill was BBC1’s City Hospital. Here’s some of the quotes that I can remember:

I’ve just flown in from Ni robi.

…taken to a hospital in Nybroie…

He’s got a broken…sorry that was wrong…He’s got apaendsytus
sorry… appendicitis.

…who’s hd an operation last night

Now either this person was drunk, dyslexic or just not concentrating. But it made me think, these must be written live as it was a live show.

All rock and roll

Warm weather, a few cans of Red Stripe and cool music. This was the recipe for last night as The Redwings returned to Dry Bar in Manchester. Despite the low turnout on a wednesday evening, the band were even better than just a few weeks ago. Most of the crowd were must younger and there for the last band of the evening. Only thing I can say fro the last band was that they were a little “christian rock”.
If you get a chance check out The Redwings in; Manchester, Preston, London and Barnsley.

First article

I’ve finally had my first article published online. It’s been put in Ovi Magazine an online publication in Finland that an old school friend, Asa, runs.

The article, entitles H1-B: The elusive visa, is just a short piece about the current state of US immigration. This has spurred me on to think about writing some more articles.

It finally settled in

So yesterday it finally settled in, I’m moving to another country! agggh! I’ll say that again, aaaagh! Having had my leaving party you would have thought this would have settled in before now but no. Only now have I realized the number of things that need sorting and sheer about of change that’ll occur during the coming months. There really isn’t much to worry about now, any problems that arise can probably be fixed with money.
Now, of course this move is my choice and it is going to bring many great benefits to my life. Time to “get with the program” and get on with the move! Everything is going to be just fine.

Leaving Party

This weekend was my leaving party. I know it’s a while until I actually leave the country but it was the only weekend that most people could make. With the England match kicking things off a steady stream of people began to arrive. With lots of food and a very generous helping of booze this was going to be a good night. Now, I can’t actually confirm that it was a good night, since I don’t remember all of it. Going purely off the amount of alcohol left in the morning it must have been. Almost everything was gone, apart from a small amount of Tequila.

Thanks to everyone for coming, especially those who helped clean up the next morning (as I was completely incapable of doing so).

Free calls

Having raved on this blog about Skype, that’s now old news. There’s a new kid on the block with the full weight of “Web 2.0” behind them. Jajah is the latest phone company but with a twist.

All calls are initiated from the internet. When you call someone from your address book your home phone rings and then their phone rings. Now that’s cool in itself. However, if you have your phones registered the call is completely free (between certain countries). Very cool!
