Kodak Photobooth

After many years of taking photos with my digital camera I finally got around to printing them. A quick search in Google led me to Boots (the chemist) in Manchester. They have the fancy Kodak Photobooth machines where you insert anything from a range of storage devices and it can print your pictures. Now most of the pictures I wanted in the standard 4 x 6 size. 3 however I wanted to tbe slightly larger, 2 artistic shots of New York and one of myself and Nikki. So I clicked enlarge and without thinking chose the middle option without looking at the size. A few minutes later my pictures popped out of the machine. They all looked great. There I am thinking this is a wonderful machine it was so easy. But then I look confused around the picture frames on show around the photo booth. The machine had printed the enlargements in 6 x 8. Not a single picture frame in the shop. Continue reading

The Frost Arrives

The weather is starting to get cold in England (well Manchesrer anyway). Dropping to around -3C (about 25F) during the night. This morning everything was covered in frost and any water completely frozen.

Nationl Health Service

In England we have a ‘free’ health services called National Health Service (NHS). They’re known for being a little on the bad side. But, you get what you pay for. Now, I’ve not been to the doctors in over about 7 years, thankfully. I hate those people who get a cold, bang their leg or sneeze and book an appointment with the doctor. Wait a few days and see if it goes away! But I digress. I rang the doctors; To my suprise when I asked for an appointment the woman asked “Would you like an appointment with the doctor?” What was she expecting? Perhaps I should have asked to see the Witch Doctor. Well obviously that was what I wanted. But then even more supprise, she offered me an appointment at 4:10pm today! I nearly dropped the phone and then double checked, “you mean today?” and sure enough it was. Perhaps things are getting better with the national health service!

Subway

I don’t eat at Subway that often but everytime I go there I get really really annoyed. You look at the menu and pick a sandwich, they make it seem so simple. Then there’s the obligatory choice of bread. But what the hell is it with them asking what you want in the sandwich! Didn’t I just decide by picking it off the menu.
Me – “I’d like a Subway Club please, on wheat something bread”
Staff – “Do you want cheese in that?”
Now perhaps I’m being stupid but you wouldn’t walk into a restaurant order Lasagne and expect to be asked if you’d like pasta in it! My usual reply is “well put everything that’s supposed to be in it”. I don’t want to specify, perhaps I won’t get all the bits I want. I don’t remember them charging less if I don’t have olives, or dressing. You’ve got to get your moneys worth haven’t you! What if you missed out on some expensive meat, cheese or something. It would be really nice to walk in next time and hear the following reply instead, “Would you like all the things to make it look like the picture?” Since that’s what sold it to me, I’d like to be that sandwich. Perhaps I’m expecting to much.

London

This weekend was a bit of a boozy do. Having had a ‘few’ drinks on Friday I travelled down to London to meet with friends Matt & Sally. The evening was started with fireworks for the Lord Major’s show down on the river Thames. Actually a very good fireworks display for the UK. Thankfully we managed to get a good spot to watch, right on the river front down near the National Theatre.

Disabled Parking

Disabled parking in the UK seems to be increasing. Before I start; I’m not attacking those people who need it and appologies now if I’m misunderstanding who use the spaces. While in town today I noticed that many of the disabled spaces close to the shops contains expensive cars. Of the 4 disabled spaces I passed all the cars had disabled badges displayed in the window. The cars were; A Range Rover, BMW, Ford Feista (ok not expensive), Mercedes E-Class.
Being contraversial, are these people getting disability which is paying for the cars? or is it a trend that disabled people are wealthy. I’d love to know. There is the case that if you look after a family member who has a disability then you can apply for a disabled badge for you car. I don’t know if that means you can only use it when the family member is with you but expect that is abused.

Bowling

Americans just treat bowling completely differently from the UK. Firstly in some parts of the US they take it very seriously, blowing every week. It’s not so much that way in California.
On a Saturday night I went bowling with Nikki and some of her friends. After 9pm the serious bowling stops and the party begins. 2 huge projection screens drop by the pins and music videos blare out. The lights are dimmed and UV lights (black-light to Americans) are switched on. To add to all the effect, the balls are all luminuous so glow under the light. Disco lights dance over the polished wooden lanes as the noise of falling pins is drowned out by Keane playing. The only thing close would be a roller-disco in England (but they’re just for kids).
Well as if that wasn’t different enough, all bowling alleys in America serve beer (once you’ve shown ID). We ordered 2 pitchers (which came with metal cooling blocks in the middle). Of course, this being a serious sport you can’t take the beer onto the lanes. But like every drinking rule in America they have a silly way round it….Simply; the beer must stay behind the lanes on top of the rack where the balls are stored.
The beer flowed, my bowling got better and a good time was had by all.

Babies

The first of my friend (Richard) from school had a baby a few weeks ago, he and his wife Charlotte are going to make excellent parents. They are so kind and I can already see how they’re lives are becoming devoted to the happiness and loving of their new born. Check out the first family picture

I think it’s amazing that some of my friends are having children. For me it’s just not the right time..I’ve got too much I want to do and acheive before bringing someone else into the world. One day….One day…

Packing things up

I have to vacate my apartment in California for a few weeks while I return home. So packing all my stuff away ready to be stored. Amazingly only a few items need to remain in the USA
Packing
A true sign of my life here; it includes, Tivo, DVD player, Wifi basestation, swimming shorts, ‘the halloween outfit’, various cables, DVDs, VHS of Sky Diving and Snowboarding gloves. Its supprising how little you need 😉

Internet Banking

So recently my bank revised it’s internet banking service. The new one is much quicker, smoother and appears to offer some more features. Since I’m an Apple Mac user it also enabled me to use their site in Safari. Well excellent, finally the bank gets it right. A week on, I got back to check what’s going in and out of my site…and there we are….

The Internet browser you are using is not supported by Online Banking. Use the link below to see the complete list of browsers we support

So what was the problem? No idea, it worked just great for me….waiting to hear what my bank have to say on the matter.

Halloween – USA Style – Part 2

Wel I did it, went to a real halloween party in America and then a birthday party with a similar theme. To prove it, here’s me with Nikki.

Chester (who’s party it was) has several postings on his blog. One, Two

The party was a Karaoke party. People who know me will tell you this is one of my least favourite things in the world. But I made it thought it. Since I didn’t have to sing it was probably just fine for everyone. Nikki did an excellent job of Guns ‘n Roses though.
